Daniel Blackman is the founder and chairman of the Chipkoe Foundation, an organization established to address intergeneration and cultural gaps that exist within the environmental justice movement. In 2006, his passion for environmental justice was fueled when he was asked to host a screening and discussion on Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” documentary on Climate Change amongst civil rights and community leaders, churches, and environmental advocacy groups. Recognizing his ability to build diverse coalitions while effectively communicating the importance of conservation through social responsibility, Mr. Blackman was appointed by the National Wildlife Federation to serve on a Climate Policy Commission co-sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus to address environmental injustices in minority communities throughout America. This appointment led to an opportunity to serve as a board liaison and consultant to the National Wildlife Federation, opportunities that Mr. Blackman says are, “…vital to my credibility as an eco-advocate, rather than an eco-opportunist. Without Jerome Ringo and the NWF, I may never have received a national platform to address the consequences of an environmentally-illiterate generation or how climate change will disproportionately affect communities of color…”
Prior to establishing the Chipkoe Foundation, Mr. Blackman’s extensive background afforded him the opportunity to serve as a business consultant and community activist. Early in his career, he worked with some of the most notable brands in the entertainment world including Walt Disney World, Radio One, J Records, and Bad Boy Entertainment, until he transitioned into his true passion – community organizing. Shortly after this transition, he became the youngest board member of the Atlanta Business League, a guest speaker at the Congressional Black Caucus and numerous civil rights conferences, and is recognized as one of America’s “Under 40” rising environmental justice voices. Politically, he has served various grassroots “Get Out The Vote” efforts, assisted with the late Maynard Jackson’s “American Voters League”, and served on various campaigns in Georgia and throughout the United States. He is an avid believer in entrepreneurship, and recently launched http://GeorgiaPlanet.com, an online environmental community, to serve as an information portal for campuses, communities, cities, and citizens interested in conservation and sustainability throughout the State of Georgia.
One of Mr. Blackman’s most coveted appointments is his service as a board member of the Georgia Conservancy’s Generation Green Board. In this capacity, he is able to use his influence to bring together people diverse in culture and generation with the hope of inspiring action, education, and true change through social responsibility. He believes in cleaner and healthier cities where citizens and their children are protected from air pollution and have have access to clean drinking water. Globally, he supports clean water initiatives and believes that access to clean water is our moral obligation to those whom are victim to severe poverty. Mr. Blackman is an Alum of Clark Atlanta University, and he and his wife Jeanelle are the proud parents of two children – the family resides in Atlanta, GA.
