  • Online Community Engagement - What is an online community? “online community,” but the term generally refers to a group of people with some common interest or focus who interact online. Daniel defines a “community” as “a group of people who have been brought together, or have brought themselves together, under a common umbrella and who are having a conversation with each other.” Regardless of definitions, some examples of online communities could include: (List)

Our Community Engagement Approach

A very relevant quote for the time in which we are in comes from a Native American proverb which reminds us that, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” This proverb yields an invaluable reminder that bridging generational gaps is vital to the succession of our communities, our national, and the world!

“Intergeneration and Cross-Culture Engagement” is a bridge-building collaboration facilitated by Daniel Blackman and various organizations which focuses on how we develop and implement civic engagement initiatives aimed at the next generation of students, faculty, and scholars in higher education; and how they interact with our other campuses, communities, and cities.

Unfortunately, as Baby-Boomers retire, the Leadership Gap widens. So how do we engage the 95 million young people born between 1978 and 2000, compared to 78 million Baby Boomers? More importantly, how do we create a culture of responsibility while strengthening societal literacy?
It has never been more apparent that higher education, as an industry, is driven by the culture of the diversity of its student body, faculty and staff, and their collective interactions with the communities and cities which surround them. Colleges and Universities are struggling to reinvent themselves in the face of new and innovative challenges, especially in regard to culture and generation. Yet these challenges also present remarkable opportunities for innovation, communication, and civic purpose cultural and generation lines.

Our focus is to determine and understand why large-scale social and environmental change has been slow to emerge, while advocating for a “Responsibility Revolution” (how we engage, develop, and position our society and the industries therein for long term viability and sustainable development). Considerable scholarship around the next generation of leadership, perhaps in the form of creating “Eco-Ambassadors” on our college campuses, is currently one of our most efficient approaches when building synergies between campuses, communities, and cities. Facilitating these conversations is vital to Daniel’s commitment to addressing and resolving Societal Issues and challenges that our nation and the world will face over the next decade.
